| Bio: | I am an evolutionary ecologist. This means I study the evolution of organisms (in particular plants and insects) in an ecological setting. I do not claim to have all the answers. I have a small sub-set of answers that currently hold true. I also have a non-traditional belief system. That is, I do not believe in organized religion of any sort, but I recognize a faith. More? Hmmm, Ok, I was born in Connecticut, moved to Austin, Texas when I was 9 by way of Chicago. At 15, we moved to Mesquite, Texas. I went to 3 out of the 4 high schools that are there (1 wasn't built yet when I was there). Left school at 17. I think technically, I could be considered a drop out, but I returned to get my diploma and cross the stage because I had the required credits. At 17, I moved to Denver, Colorado, then Silverthorne. I returned to Mesquite briefly and then went back to Austin to attend college. I have a bachelor's degree in Zoology from the University of Texas at Austin. I think I graduated at the bottom of my class. I worked for two years at a minimum wage stinking job at the Travis County Animal shelter where I helped destroy up to 75 animals a day. I think people suck. I moved to New Orleans, which is where I call home, worked for Screwlane and then attended the University of New Orleans to receive my Master's degree in Biology. I conducted my research for three months on Barro Colorado Island in the Panama Canal. I graduated at the top of my class. I had been promised a spot in the new Conservation Biology program at UNO, but two weeks before I was to begin classes/research, my advisor told me that my undergraduate grades were not high enough to attend their prestigious institution. Quickly, I found a place at Auburn University to pursue my PhD. research. The less said, the better. Oh, but it should be noted - My GPA was second only to Yuping's. She got an "A" in systematics whereas I got a "B" - so my final GPA was a 3.98. Not bad for someone who was told she was unteachable in the second grade... I then left Auburn and took a post-doc at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. Probably the best experience of my life. I was around great female role-models and I hope that I can live up to their image. I am currently a professor in Buffalo, NY. | |
